The 2009 end of Key Stage 2 SATs (year 6) will take place from Monday 11th May to Friday 15th May.

The end of Key Stage 2 SATs test students in the subjects of English, Mathematics and Science.

English

The English tests consist of

Reading This test lasts 45 minutes. Students read a variety of texts answering questions on each. Some questions are multiple choice; some require short answers and others require a paragraph length answer.

Shorter Writing and Spelling The spelling test requires students to spell 20 words in context. This means the words are not simply given in a list but are placed in the middle of a sentence so students can see how they are used. The shorter writing test lasts for 20 minutes and requires students to produce a piece of writing according to the instructions of the prompt.

Longer Writing The longer writing test lasts 45 minutes and expects students to produce a piece of writing based on its prompt. Students are also marked on their handwriting for this piece of work.

 

Mathematics

The Mathematics test consists of

Mental Mathematics This paper lasts 20 minutes and expects students to answer questions using mental arithmetic.

Paper A This paper lasts 45 minutes and requires students to answer a variety of questions without the aid of a calculator.

Paper B This paper also lasts 45 minutes and requires students to answer a variety of questions - a calculator may be used for this paper.

 

Science

There are two Science papers - A and B. Each lasts 45 minutes and topics covered include...

  • life processes and living things
  • materials and their properties
  • physical processes
